Oh No, Someone Fell at my Store!

Slip and Fall

While you do everything to prevent accidents, such as a slip and fall, you need to be prepared should one happen.  It can be chaotic and you have an injured person requiring your attention.  Having a plan, one that you practice and share with your staff. This will prepare you should this dreaded situation occur.  Following are four key steps:

  • Secure the area – make sure the area around the individual is clear. Address any conditions that could have caused the person to fall.
  • Assess the person’s physical state – if they are unresponsive or seriously hurt, call 911 immediately. If they are responsive and do not appear noticeably hurt ask if they would like medical assistance.
  • Complete an incident report – as soon as the physical needs of the person have been addressed, be sure to document the incident. This includes taking pictures of the area where the fall occurred from several angles. This is important should a legal situation arise later.
  • Talk to witnesses – ask witnesses for their names and phone numbers and include this on your incident report. Again, this information is needed should a legal situation arise from the incident.

Finally review your insurance coverage to determine if you have comprehensive coverage for a liability situation like a slip and fall. Our staff can review this with you.
