Back To School: Backpack Tips

Back To School: Backpack Tips

Use these backpack safety tips to protect your kids’ backs as they head back to school.

You might think your kids are just complaining about their heavy backpacks, but if you’ve ever actually picked one up you were probably shocked! With a huge number of books to carry to and from school, plus lunch and other necessities, today’s kids are bearing a heavy load.

To protect your kids’ backs as they head back to school, use these backpack safety tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

  • Strap Safety: It might not look as “cool,” but make sure your kids use both shoulder straps to avoid straining their muscles and over-curving their spines. Also, make sure the straps fit properly by tightening them until they hold the backpack a couple of inches above your children’s waists.
  • Wonder At Weight: Instead of just classifying your kids’ backpacks as “heavy,” actually weigh them. If the pack exceeds 20 percent of your son or daughter’s body weight, it’s not safe to carry.
  • Look To Lockers: Encourage your kids to use their lockers instead of carrying all of the heavy books they need with them throughout the day.

Good luck to you and your kids with the start of the new school year! For all of your insurance needs in Westchester County and across New York, contact Allan Block Insurance Agency in Tarrytown.
