House fires can be devastating and it is important to do everything you can to reduce your risks of a fire, but sometimes the unexpected happens. Figuring out what to do first after a home fire can be very stressful when all you want is to get your life back on track. Here are some things to do (or do not) after a home fire.
- Do not enter the home without clearance from the fire department. Fires can rekindle from smoldering embers or residual heat and ceilings or roofs may be compromised and subject to collapse.
- Do contact your Insurance Agent to discuss your options and start the claims process.
- Do make sure the fire department or utility provider deemed your water, electricity or gas safe to use before restarting.
- Do secure the property. If any windows or doors are damaged, make sure to board them up to prevent possible vandalism or theft.
- Do not throw away any damaged goods until after an inventory is made. Save all receipts from time of fire, they will be needed for insurance.
- Do call a plumber if the heat is off in the winter, they will be able to drain pipes so they do not freeze or burst.
