What to Do When the Lights Go Out? How to Prepare for a Winter Storm

preparing-for-winter-storm-original

Do you know what to do when the power goes off during a winter storm? Being properly prepared is key to staying safe until the power returns. Winter storms can bring heavy snow and violent winds that can break branches and topple trees onto power lines.

When you hear news that a severe winter storm is approaching it is important to be ready so stay informed with updated storm information. Building an emergency kit is important for comfort and survival during severe weather. Your kit should include multiple flashlights, radio for updates, extra batteries for both, first aid kit to treat minor injuries, blankets and coats for warmth.

Some choices for non-electric heating are wood burning stoves, kerosene and gas powered space heaters. All of these options will keep you warm but be sure you know how to property operate them and have proper ventilation.

Safety Dos and Don’ts during a power outage

Do:

  • Make sure all cell phones and laptops are fully charged.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to retain temperature.
  • Wear layers of clothing to keep warm.
  • Turn off and disconnect electronic appliances to avoid power surges.
  • Fill your vehicle’s gas tank before a storm in case you need to leave your home.
  • Fill bathtub with water in case you need water for household uses.

Don’t:

  • Run generators inside your home or in a closed garage.
  • Consume food that hasn’t been stored at the necessary temperature.
  • Burn charcoal or propane indoors.
  • Use your oven as a source of heat.
