Busting Basement Flooding

Protecting Your Home From Rising Waters

In the last five years, all fifty states have experienced either a flood or a flash flood. That flooding can be especially problematic for homeowners who have a basement, as just a few inches of flood water can cause tens of thousands of dollars of damage. Protect your home against the risk of April showers bringing flooding in addition to May flowers with these basement flood prevention tips.

  • Make sure that the ground around your home slopes away from your foundation.
  • Clean downspouts and gutters each year, and inspect them for leaks. Check that your downspouts extend at least 6 feet away from the foundation of your home.
  • Inspect your basement window wells and doors. If their seals are not watertight, remedy that.
  • Update your home inventory so that everything you have in your basement is listed in detail on it.
  • Install a high water alarm on your sump pump so you will know if your pump cannot keep up with the rising water level.
