Congratulations on your New Kitchen Appliances! But, Can your electrical panel handle it?

You’ve spent tons of time researching the perfect appliances with all the features you could have wanted, everything is exactly what you wanted and you’ve finally gotten the brand new kitchen or home theater of your dreams. In all of your planning though, did you check to make sure that your electrical system can handle all of the new upgrades?

If your home is more than 20 years old, a simple checkup on your electrical system can make sure that you are safely and effectively receiving the power you need. The older your home is the more likely it is that you have a smaller electric panel with less capacity to power your things. Homes built is the 40’s and 50’s had 60-amp service, homes in the 80’s most likely had 200amp service, whereas homes built today have 400- or even 600-amp service to accommodate updated equipment and technology.

While you may think of large equipment such as air conditioners and home appliances being the culprit for increased energy usage instead in many cases it is added items like computers, mobile devices and large televisions.

Outdated electrical wiring can result in electrical fires.

Older homes may not have the wiring capacity to handle the increased demand from our modern appliances. Improperly working outlets and switches can be a possible fire hazard. Signs to be aware of are discolored, buzzing or crackling, loose-fitting or warm to the touch.

Do you frequently trip fuses or breakers?

Breakers and fuses are safety devices that help to prevent overloading your electrical system. If you are frequently tripping breakers or blowing fuses it can indicate you have a serious condition!

Giving your electrical system and panel a checkup will help keep your family safe and let you enjoy all of the things that help make your house a cozy home.
