October was National Fire Safety Month. If you missed it, or haven't gotten to your list of safety chores, take a quick moment to run through these basics.
Keep an "important document" file in a fireproof box in your bedroom so you can get it out of the house with you in the event of a fire.
Keep a roll-down safety ladder in each bedroom if sleeping quarters are on the second floor of your home. It will provide safer window escapes.
Check the charge on your fire extinguishers and familiarize yourself with how to use them. Keep them in accessible multiple areas around the house, and teach all occupants how to use them.
Install an automatic stovetop fire suppression canister that can put down a grease fire.
Replace those smoke detector batteries and make sure there is one in every sector of the home.
With a few, fairly easy actions, you can vastly improve your family's chances of surviving a fire.
