Safeguarding Your Storage Unit

Safeguarding Your Storage Unit

Do Your Possessions In Storage Have Protection?

Whether you are repurposing your basement, downsizing your home, or making space for a child returning from college for the summer, you might find yourself in need of extra storage space. When you do, the natural solution is to rent out a storage unit. It is important to consider whether your insurance coverage will extend to that unit before you move your belongings to it. Here are a few questions you should ask.

  • Will my homeowners insurance offer protection? Ask your insurance agent if your homeowners insurance policy contains coverage for belongings you store somewhere other than your property.
  • Does coverage come with my unit? Some storage facilities will offer insurance for their units, but it is generally based off the square footage of the rented space. If you decide to use their coverage, make sure it is sufficient to fully protect your possessions.
  • What am I storing? So you can easily remember what you put in storage, and easily file a claim should the need arise, create an inventory of all of the items you put into your unit.
