Tips to Protect Your Identity During Tax Time

Tax-Time-original

It’s Tax time and while it may not be your favorite for many hackers it is their favorite time of year and there are plenty of opportunities to steal your personal information or tax refund. Here are some tips to help keep your information safe and make sure you get your tax refund and no one else.

  • I NEED THIS IMMEDIATELY!!! – Many scammers will request for information to be sent to them as quickly as possible. By demanding the information now or putting a short deadline on the request they are hoping you will respond without considering if the request is genuine or not.
  • Password (Password123) – Using strong passwords will go a long way in making it harder for hackers to access your information. Avoid using words that are easy to guess like Password123, your birthday or social security number. Longer passwords are better (12-15 characters) provide more security. Remember not to leave passwords out in plain sight on your computer for easy access!
  • Use Direct Deposit – Having your tax refund deposited directly into your bank account via direct deposit can prevent thieves from stealing your refund check.
  • Don’t Procrastinate – Filing your taxes earlier in the tax season makes it harder for thieves to file on your behalf or access your tax refund.

While these tips should help protect your information and tax return if you suspect that someone has stolen your identity or tax refund there is additional information from the IRS at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/taxes-security-together  .
