While the weather has been unusually warm here in the Northeast, it’s not an excuse to ignore preparing your car for a winter storm. If you haven’t already, now is the time to bring your car in for a winter service so your mechanic can inspect your tires, change your wiper blades, check your brakes, heating and defroster system, and anti freeze levels. It’s also the time to do a checklist to make sure you have emergency items in your car. We suggest having the following items in your car – ice scraper, snow shovel, jumper cables, flashlight, blankets, deicer and extra food.
When driving in snow, it is important to maintain extra distance between your car and the one in front of you. Do not use your cruise control. Applying brakes while in cruise control mode can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Also don’t pump anti-lock brakes. Instead, press firmly on the brakes and steer to avoid danger. Remember to keep your lights on. You want to make sure others can see you during a storm. If you own a 4×4 vehicle, do not get overconfident. These vehicles can skid like any other vehicle. They are much heavier than other vehicles and harder to turn and stop.
And finally before heading out, don’t forget to plan your route. Use major roadways! While the snow may be lovely, being on back roads during a storm could mean being stuck as they are often the last ones to be cleared.
